Th1 and Th2 Dominance

Th1 and Th2 Dominance
How to know if you are Th1 or Th2 dominant.

If you have an autoimmune disorder are have any chronic health problem, you will want to know some basics about Th1 and Th2.

The cells of the blood stream are divided into two basic groups. Red cells carry oxygen and white cells deal with immunity. The immune system is in charge of determining which cells or proteins are friendly and which are foe. The immune system is also responsible for cleaning up dead and dying cells from your own body. The body produces many types of white cells and they have many different functions. One group of white cells is called T helper cell group. T helper cells are unique in that they donít fight invaders directly but help direct the response. In one sense they are like traffic cops. The T helper response comes in two primary flavors called Th1 and Th2. Th1 cells stimulate the production of antibodies and Th2 cells stimulate macrophage proliferation and activation.

It is important that the Th1 and Th2 divisions be in balance, that is that the one or the other doesnít become dominant. Th1 or Th2 dominance is particularly important in autoimmune problems. If one or the other becomes dominant, it triggers a cascade of reactions that lead to aggravation of the autoimmune response and also leads directly to furthering of leaky gut syndrome that further aggravates the autoimmune response and the cycle continues.

In order to get the Th1 and Th2 response balanced it is help to know if you have a dominance. The most definitive way to know is to run a cytokine blood test. Cytokines are the signaling molecules that the immune system uses as a major part of its internal communication network. At OVitaminPro.com we can order a cytokine profile for you. The most basic is $150 and a more comprehensive is about $350. Good insurance tends to cover some or all of the testing.

Letís say that youíre fighting a chronic infection or an autoimmune problem and Th1 is dominant and your Th2 response is within a healthy range. Certain herbal combinations tend to stimulate a response more strongly from one more than the other. Apex Energetics X-Viromin supports the Th1 response and X-Flm supports the Th2 response. The Th1 dominant person will want to take the X-FLM to help bring the body back into balance.

Taking X-Viromin will push the Th1 that is already elevated so you would probably find yourself feeling worse when you take it. The opposite will be true if you started with a Th2 dominance. Then taking X-FLM will make you feel worse and X-Viromin will help you feel better.

Because of this effect, you can get information from just trying one of the other to see how you feel. This method is probably too crude for most people but it is a principle that you need to understand anyway.

I want to emphasize that you will need to do a cytokine test to see what is really going on with the Th1 and Th2 systems.

If you show a dominance of Th2 or Th2 you will want to work to get those in balance. Whether you are Th1 or Th2 dominant, you will want to be sure your Vitamin D and glutathione levels are at safe levels. For Vitamin D, he best way to know is a blood test. A small percentage of people canít take Vitamin D supplements. You probably already know who you are.

Glutathione can be tested but it is done by only a couple of labs in the country and isnít cheap. We recommend using LifeWave Glutathione Patches just to be on the safe side.

You can also push the weaker Th response. If you are Th1 dominant, you will want to push the Th2 system with Apex Energetics X-Flm. Conversely, if you are Th2 dominant, you will want to push Th1 with Apex Energetics X-Viromin. By pushing, I mean take a couple of capsules two times a day for a month or two. After that along with the glutathione and Vitamin D you should have a healthier Th1/Th2 balance.
