Curcumin is the active ingredient of the spice turmeric. It has been used for over 1000 years in some cultures to help treat many types of disorders. Most notable of conditions that have shown a favorable response to curcumin are: some cancers, plaques of the brain that can lead to dementia, some viral diseases, general pain and inflammation. Curcumin is generally regarded as safe although some mild symptoms such as temporary nausea and diarrhea have been reported. Curcumin also can interfere with clotting so it is advised to discontinue use a week or so prior to surgery. Normal use is 1 teaspoon a day or as directed by your health care practitioner.
