Neurotransmitter Testing Part 2-What We Look For

As I mentioned in part one of neurotransmitter testing interpretation, we have neurotransmitters that act as excitatory or inhibitory agents. One is like the engine of a car and makes it go and the other like the brakes. The key is balance between the two.

When we get a urinary neurotransmitter profile the first thing we look at is the key excitatory neurotransmitters, epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine. These will either be elevated, depressed or some of each in most cases. If they are all elevated it means that the body is producing more of these to handle stress of some type. If these excitatory neurotransmitters are depressed, that is below the ideal levels, we are looking at depletion meaning the neurons are losing their ability to keep up. This the end stage of a stress response. You can rightly call this burn-out. A mix of levels means the person is somewhere between being stressed and burned out. We then look at the key inhibitory neurotransmitters like serotonin, glycine and GABA. These should be elevated if the primary excitatory groups are also elevated to maintain physiological balance. As time goes on the ability to maintain high levels of these inhibitory groups declines as the person enters the burnout stage. Serotonin helps modulate brain responses meaning that it helps keep things on an even keel. If your serotonin circuits are weak, you are more prone to extremes of emotion for example. If someone cuts you off in traffic and you have healthy serotonin modulation, you don't give it a second thought. If your serotonin modulation is deficient, you might think about getting a gun and start shooting for example. We then look at the second group of excitatory neurotransmitters, glutamate, histamine and PEA. This gives us further information about the brains ability to respond to stress and also gives some clues as the state of inflammation of the brain. Symptoms of anxiety, depression and insomnia and variations of these begin to manifest as the brain drifts farther from a balanced state. Of course each person will have a different response to even similar looking profiles. Fortunately most people can experience a dramatic increase in brain stability and control by using fairly simple supplements that contain amino acids and herbs.
