What Is It? EyeProtect Basics provides clinically researched levels of key nutrients in highly bioavailable forms to support retinal and macular health.
Uses For EyeProtect Basics Eye Health: The importance of nutrients for eye health has been particularly evident since the publication of a long-term multicenter, prospective study involving more than 5,000 individuals ages 55-80. Results revealed that high amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin support the health of the retina and macula. EyeProtect Basics contains clinically researched levels of these nutrients in optimally bioavailable forms. The formula is offered in versions with and without zinc. Recent research has revealed that individuals with 1 or 2 complement factor H (CFH) risk alleles may not benefit from supplemental zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two major carotenoids stored in the macula, the central part of the retina. They support retinal health by promoting the integrity and density of the macular pigment, acting as antioxidants and light filters to protect the ocular tissue. Numerous double-blind, placebo-controlled trials indicate that lutein and zeaxanthin support the health of the optical lens as well as the retina. Research has revealed that the combination also offers support for photoreceptor health and color vision.

Could you please explain this part of the product description? I assume it is referring to a genetic variance, but I would like more information, please.
Recent research has revealed that individuals with 1 or 2 complement factor H (CFH) risk alleles may not benefit from supplemental zinc.
The complement system is a part of what is called the innate immune system. People with those particular variants (1 or 2) may not respond to zinc supplementation to help with age related macular degeneration. To make this relevant you would need genetic testing detailed enough to give you that data. I am not aware that 23andme type testing would give that kind of detail.
In the meantime you can take Healthy Eyes by DaVinci. That is a zeaxanthin and lutein formula with cofactors that I personally use to keep my own ARMD at bay. Two to three a day should do the trick in most cases. Like always you should test (visit to your optometrist or ophthalmologist) take your Healthy Eyes for a year and then get retested. In my case, I found that my macular degeneration stalled out, that is quit progressing and I was able to pass my flight physical without glasses for the first time in 15 years. Your mileage may vary but this is a good place to begin for most people.
