Th1 and Th2 Basics

The immune systemís job is to recognize who is friend and who is foe. If you are healthy you have a finely-tuned immune response. If you are chronically ill and/or have an autoimmune disorder, your immune system is out of balance and has a diminished ability to distinguish the difference.

The concept of Th1 and Th2 has worked its way into the vocabulary of some of the lay population. I will help clarify what that means in general and what that might mean to you.

By way of metaphor we can use a military model. The military takes a raw recruit and depending on perceived need, aptitude of the recruit the training begins toward making the recruit a specialist whether that be cooking, electronics or sniper shooting for example.

In the same way, specialized white blood cells called lymphocytes are programmed for specific tasks. The modified lymphocytes become what we call T helper cells. There are several types of T helper cells and we use shorthand designations like Th1 (T helper type 1), Th2 (T helper type 2), Th3 and Th17 etc.

The Th1 lymphocytes are primarily programmed to address problems in the cell. Some examples of Th1 triggers are viruses, some cancers, small bacteria like mycoplasma and/or chlamydia. Examples of specific lymphocytes in the Th1 group are cytotoxic T cells and natural killer cells (NK).

Th2 lymphocytes are programmed to address threats outside the cell such as most bacteria, foreign proteins and some cancers.

In the presence of an active infection, the body can respond with a dominance of Th1 or Th2. In the short run this is a good thing. In the long haul sending too many resources toward a specific task can be detrimental. The diagnosis of the level of Th1 or Th2 activity can be done by lab testing by looking at cytokines.

The body uses cytokines as part of the immune system communication network. The body will use different cytokines to convey different messages. By looking at which cytokines are being produced, the diagnostician can get clues as to what the immune system is trying to accomplish. The particulars will be talked about in another discussion.

Another way to determine Th1 or Th2 dominance is to use supplements that push one or the other. If you use Apex Energetics X-FLM you will push the Th2 dominance.
