Nootropics and You

A few weeks back I wrote a blog about Multi-omics. Multi-omics Blog

I have one more blog about fun English words, nootropics. This is pronounced no (like no, you shouldn’t do that) o (like the letter O) tropics, being careful to pronounce both of the os.

The word nootropics comes from the Greek words for mind and turning. The term was coined by researcher Giurgea in 1972.

No agreed upon definition in the scientific community exists apart from the general description as follows.  The short version of the meaning of nootropics is a class of supplements or medications working to improve cognitive function. By cognitive function, we mean abilities like memory, attention and focus, executive functions like planning and problem solving.

Some nootropics work to optimize neurotransmitter levels like dopamine and acetylcholine.  Some work to improve brain circulation to deliver more nutrients to brain tissue. Acetylcholine is also involved in brain circulation.  Some work to lower oxidative stress and some work to contribute to brain maintenance and regeneration.

Medications considered nootropics are: Adderall, Provigil, Ritalin and Namenda.

Some over-the-counter compounds and supplements considered nootropics are: caffeine, L-theanine, creatine, bacopa mannieri, ginko biloba and piracetam.

At OvitaminPro we have a few products in mind when we think of nootropics. We have tried several over the years and currently use Percepta Sport.

Other options are:

Nordic Naturals Cognition Mushroom Complex

Berkeley Life Professional Cognitive Support

Each of these products takes a different approach to brain health. Which one will be best for you will take some experimentation.  Much is being learned about brain health so we haven’t seen the last of new products that will be available in coming years.

Remember that supplements can only do so much. Diet plays a huge role so a person must be willing to change whatever.  I am adding link to a blog that goes into that part in more detail.
