Folate and vitamin B12 are both required by the body for normal formation of red blood cells‚ cell and tissue repair‚ DNA synthesis and homocysteine metabolism. Pregnant women need folate to support fetal development; appropriate levels of folic are required during the first trimester to avoid complications.
