Fish Oil For Fathers

Happy Father’s Day to all our dads out there! This month is not only the month we celebrate Father’s Day but it also Men’s Health Month.

Most people may not realize that men have different health needs than women in many areas of nutrition. One of these areas is Fish Oils also called Omega -3s or EPA-DHA. Studies have shown that men do better with the Omega-3s derived from fish oil type of rather than from flax seed or other plant based oils. Somehow the prostate knows the difference between omega-3 from fish oils and from other sources.

Much has been said about the benefits of omega-3s, from lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of macular degeneration to easing depression. But now there are studies specific to men and how EPA-DHA might actually play a role in fertility.

A study at the University of Illinois was done using mice which lacked the gene necessary for the enzyme (delta-6-desaturase) needed to make DHA. These genetically altered mice produced fewer and ineffective sperm and where unable to breed. When the scientist added the DHA to the mice’s diet fertility was restored in the previously DHA deficient mice.

There were some previous studies that indicated that men with low sperm counts and slow sperm motility also had lower omega-3 levels!

How do you get these important Omega-3’s into your diet? The bestomega-3s come from cold water fish like anchovies and sardines.

This month we are introducing what we believe to be one of the best fish oils available to us by the company Nordic Naturals. Why Nordic Naturals? We don’t just add a new product line unless there is a good reason. Nordic Naturals sets the standard for quality of their oils. Fish oil quickly begins to oxidize so Nordic Naturals boats quick freeze the freshly caught fish and then store them in nitrogen. No oxygen in the storage container means no oxidation.

It is also good to know that the populations of sardines and anchovies that they use are stable or growing in numbers. If the amount of small or juvenile fish starts to rise in an area, they stop fishing there and move to one of their other fishing areas that won’t deplete the numbers. As we know from the experience of Monterey Bay, you can overfish a population. Decades later, the sardines of that area have yet to recover. Nordic Naturals is in this for the long haul.

Nordic Naturals also has each batch of oil assayed by an independent lab. They want to know that they are giving you the absolute best.

These facts are important to us and I am sure they are to you too.

Let us know what Nordic Natural products you would prefer. We have started with a few that we thought you would like.
